Well hello there. My name is Beshlie and I work for the Marine Management Organisation as a Marine Officer. I joined Prospect, the recognised trade union for marine officers, and soon became involved in union matters, including the young professionals network. I took on the role of environment rep and international development advocate because it is a subject I feel strongly about and thought it would be an opportunity to influence decisions affecting all MMO staff and have a positive influence outside the organisation. I have been working with management, fellow reps and Prospect officers on creating MMO’s sustainable development action plan, which ties in with the bargaining for international development project; the environment and people are very much linked in my mind. As a consequence, I applied for a two week trip to South Africa with ACTSA, an organisation described as the successor to the anti-apartheid organisation. Guess what.... I'm going and this blog will tell you about it. Eventually!

  3. Hi Beshlie
Hope you get home safe and sound, I have been following your exploits with interest. You have had quite a baptism of fire tour. I will print your blog out for my mother to read. It is sad that your trip has exposed you to the sad truths of our past. These events have been rewritten into our history books and are a reminder that this should not happen again. I saddly was conscripted into the army at the time were I was involved in a small degree in the townships and to a larger extent on the angolan border dealing with the" Cuban and SWAPO threat". These events go back to the second world war and England were also partly to blame since they encouraged it.
You might take comfort to know that our children Emma-Jean and Liam were born into the New South Africa and dont differentiate over colour and have friends from all the different cultures.
However the underpriveledged are still underpriveledged and progress is slow in the promises made by the current Government.
It still seems to be the same adage the rich get rich and the poor still remain poor even in the Black culture where those that have benefitted from affirmative action campaigns and those close to government are concerned.
Africa is a hostile continent and has a history of horrific events mainly due to race, culture and religion and (interference from the western world)
    Regards
    Andrew

  4. Thank you Andrew; great to hear from someone with such direct experience of the country. I hope your mum enjoys the read; please send huge apologies that I was not able to visit; as you can see my trip was very busy! I hope to come back one day.
